MUSICAL AUDIO DRAMA IN OPEN CARRIAGES
Charlemagne spent a significant part of his life travelling. The imperial court moved from one Pfalz to the next. His children were born on the road. On these journeys people feasted, got married, died, and most of all, fought wars.
Restless, Charles spent most of the early years of his reign on campaigns, secured borders, conquered territories, massacred entire armies. The audio play on open carriages of the Rhetian Railway picks up on the theme of travelling and reveals the violent side of the emperor's character. An intense sound installation in claustrophobic tunnels of the Rhetian Railway, composed by Peter Conradin Zumthor, narrated by Samuel Streiff.
The audio play ends in Bergün, where we will serve tea. Passengers from Bergün can stay there and do not have to travel back to Tiefencastel
