GREGORIAN CHANT IN CHURCHES OF THE REGION
The gregorian chants of the Lauds and the Compline originated in monastic life. They announce the break of day and tell of approaching night – a symbol of death for the aging man. The songs are based on ancient psalms which speak of sorrow, hope, the search of meaning and a longing for paradise. The psalms hint at the ancient yearning for safety and comfort, a motif that pervades world literature – impressive and timeless in St. Francis' «Cantico del Frate Sole», the closing chant of the Lauds in Mistail.
